Originally from Southern California, I received my PhD in Scotland from the University of St. Andrews. Currently, I am a Lecturer in Film Studies at Seattle University.

I am also an author of several works on cinema history. My most recent book looks at how 19th century panorama paintings, literature, and photography contributed to the development of motion picture technology. At the moment, I am completing my second book, which looks at how visual culture in Southern California – from 1870 to 1920 – fueled the creation of Los Angeles as the home of the American motion picture industry.
